DishNet and Bell Express Vu loves to massacre receivers when they are ECM-ing a hacked system. The way they do it is that they either corrupt, rewrite or delete the EEPROM chip that is located in all Echostar receivers. The nature of these receivers is that they can take so called "firmware" updates via the data stream normally used to update the receiver to provide additional useful features like faster better menus, interactive capabilities, HDTV compatibility etc...
This can be used to attack hacked systems. It is a good idea to back up your EEPROM chip in case something nasty happens to it by utilizing a little gadget called a JTAG programmer. You can also use this device to convert your DishNet receiver to BEV by changing the program since the two systems use the same hardware. In this industry the name of this chip is TSOP so I will refer to it as such. The software that you will use is called Jkeys and the current version is 2.9.10 available on the Downloads page.
Get a nice Buffered JTAG
HERE . Your receiver must have a JTAG port on it to work with this. Receivers listed by model number are: |

Look at the bottom of your IRD, there should be a rectangular hole. Look inside and you should see something similar to the figure below. This is the JTAG port of a 2700 receiver. |
To extend the length of the JTAG, you can use a parallel (male/female) cable. |
Unplug IRD from power outlet, insert the two AA batteries into the battery case. |
Take the JTAG's ground (alligator clip) and attach it to a metal part of the ird case, anywhere grounded
(usually a case screw works good). |
Place the pogo pins on the correct solder pads located in the JTAG port and plug IRD into power outlet. |
Start up program (Jkeys). Jkeys will read and display all the information to your scree |

When connecting leads, always cut the power off by pulling the plug. NEVER CONNECT A CABLE WHILE IRD IS ON! |

| The order of the pogo pins are already preconfigured for all the models (with exception to 6000 and DTV models). You just need to place it in the correct soldering pads. To use the hands free feature, first adjust the pogo pins to the correct length and press into the Jtag port. Use the pressure of the pogo pins to push up onto the pogo pin connector so that it latches onto the edge of the JTAG port (metal edge). |
